Obituary of Virginia McKinnie

“Come with me my child, for its time to go home”.   On Thursday, January 25, 2024, God came for his beloved daughter, Virginia McKinnie. 

Virginia McKinnie, known to most as “Jen or Jennie” was born on July 31, 1933, in the state of South Carolina to the late George Nash Alford and Ophelia Alford.  She was married to the late Harvey Durant and then to the late James McKinnie.    

Virginia graduated from Spaulding High School and attended Allen University in South Carolina. She retired after working several years for the East Windsor Township Senior Citizen Recreation Center, but much of her life was dedicated to caring for her family.  Virginia was a member of the Union African Methodist Episcopal Church in Allentown, New Jersey. She was greatly dedicated to serving in her church and worked within the missionary ministry and stewardess.

She was a warm and caring person who loved her family.  Her greatest joy was entertaining family and friends in her home.  Virginia had an ability to reach people in a deep positive way that’s most memorable; always lending support and encouragement. Her second greatest love was gardening.  Loving, cultivating and watching things grow was such a joy to her.

Virginia McKinnie leaves to cherish fond memories her three children:  Vivian Smith, Deborah McKinnie and James McKinnie Jr.; her one sister, Thomasena Alford; her brother, George Alford; her youngest brother, Julius Alford (wife, Abby Alford); her daughter-in-law, Surethia McKinnie; her six grandchildren, Kimberly Smith, Kaala Smith, Rahquanya Jones, Brittanie McKinnie, JaQualya McKinnie and Maleek McKinnie.   She also has twelve great grandchildren, a goddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Services at Glackin Chapel, 136 Morrison Ave., Hightstown, NJ. 

Cremation services were private.
