Obituary of John H. Flathmann, Jr.
John H. Flathmann, Jr., 100, of Meadow Lakes in Hightstown, NJ, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2018.
John was born June 17, 1917 in Ridgefield Park, NJ, having lived in Southampton, LI, Rahway, NJ, Easton, PA, Steelton, PA, Havre de Grace, MD, Jackson, MS, Manila, Philippines, North Arlington and Upper Montclair, NJ, Charleston, WV, and Scotch Plains and Rossmoor, NJ. He graduated from Lafayette College with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Commissioned as 2nd Lt. in the Army of the United States, John’s employment by Bethlehem Steel Co. was interrupted by orders to report to active duty at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. He served five years in the Ordnance Corps and lastly in the development and field application of the Proximity Fuze on Luzon Island. It concluded with a short term in Technical Intelligence at Tokyo, Japan, returning to reserve status as a Major. He was then employed by E.I. DuPont as a design and construction engineer at the Arlington Plant (Kearny, NJ), the Belle Plant (Belle, WV) and Grasselli Plant (Linden, NJ), retiring in September 1982 after 36 ½ years of service.
Active in the Episcopal Church, John served as vestryman and warden at All Saint Church in Scotch Plains for 14 years.
He was predeceased by his wife of 49 ½ years, Camille (Forgie); his wife of 9 ½ years, Anne Mary (Boggs); his daughter, Gail J. Palmisano; his brother, George; his sisters, June and Gertrude Svihra; and his dear friend, Dorothy Walters; he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Vanessa Flathmann of Oviedo, FL; his four grandchildren; his five great-grandchildren; and his son-in-law, Joseph Palmisano of Falls Church, Virginia.
Cremation services will be private with a memorial service to be held on September 29, 2018, at Rahway Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Simplicity Funeral and Cremation Services at Glackin Chapel, 136 Morrison Ave., Hightstown, NJ.
